Ken Morton, a TLT Life Member who moved to White Rock a number of years ago, passed away earlier this month. Please find below the article about him that his new club, the White Rock Players, wrote about him.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ken Morton. Ken was a long time member of the White Rock Players’Club, having been an actor, director, producer, president
and Theatre BC zone rep. He had a lifelong passion for theatre.

After arriving in Canada he immediately became a member of the Terrace Little Theatre in1969, and remained actively involved with them until 1992. Prior to his arrival in Canada,Ken was directly active with various community theatre groups in Austria, Germany and England as an actor/director and club member with responsibilities for organisation including the office of President. While with the British Forces overseas he was responsible
for promoting theatre on several Army bases outside of England. He organised workshops and fostered participation in festivals.

In his early days in Terrace he was elected as zone chair of the Skeena Zone in what was then B.C.D.A. and now is Theatre BC. He encouraged groups in the area to become members and promoted Zone festivals. He served on the advisory committee which planned the then new R.E.M Lee Theatre in Terrace built by the local school board. As the first event to be held in the new building, it was decided to offer to host the provincial festival of the then B.C.D.A. The offer was accepted and clubs from every Zone had the opportunity to use this state of the art theatre. Ken served on the committee planning the festival and stage managed the event in 1976. While with Little Theatre in Terrace he directed many plays and won Best Director awards in 1977,1979 and in 1992 and won Best Director at the Mainstage Festival which was held that year in Campbell River. Ken was President of the Terrace Little Theatre and was elected as zone chairperson several times during his stay in the Terrace area. He also served on the board of the Terrace and
District Arts Council, being their president for two years.

To further his own theatrical education he attended credit courses at UBC, taught drama and gave workshops to students and teachers. He encouraged high schools in the Terrace area to participate in Zone festivals.

Since retiring from his job as a teacher he was very active in the White Rock Players’Club having been their President during the time when the theatre was closed by the City of White Rock for failing to come up to code for public performances. He worked hard for the theatre to raise the money needed to carry out the necessary renovations to the White Rock Playhouse to meet the standards required. At that time the Vancouver Zone was not very active and needed a much needed shot in the arm. Ken again became zone chair and helped to further the fortunes of the Zone. He was appointed by the then President of Theatre BC JimWarner as a member of the board with a special responsibility for the Vancouver Zone and served for one year attending board meetings. He was awarded the Zone Recognition Award both in the Skeena Zone and later in the Vancouver Zone. He remained a dedicated believer in strong and active Community Theatre as was shown by
his keen interest in Theatre BC.

A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at the Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd White Rock, from
2 –4 pm on Saturday March 3rd.

and an article in Surrey Now:
Theatre community says goodbye to Ken Morton

BY MELANIE MINTY, SURREY NOW FEBRUARY 23, 2012

Live life with passion. Immerse yourself with what you love to do. Sure, you can gripe about not having enough free time, or funds, to keep you in the lifestyle you would prefer, etc. Go ahead, I’ll give you a minute or so to vent. In the end, you do realize that there is no free time. Time costs – maybe not in dollars and cents, but it is important to use our allotted life time doing something we love doing. OK, not 24/7 – that would be a big burnout, for sure.

I devote my “free” time to dance and theatre. Love it. And I am not alone. Ken Morton was one of those individuals who squeezed out a lot of theatre time.

Ken recently passed away, and the entire community-theatre world will certainly miss him, one way or another. Ken was a longtime member of White Rock Players’ Club, having been an actor, director, producer, president and Theatre BC zone rep. He had a lifelong passion for theatre.

Ah yes, there is that passion thing again. Ken arrived in Canada in 1969 and immediately immersed himself in Terrace Little Theatre. Before Terrace and Canada, Ken was directly active with various community-theatre groups in Austria, Germany and England, as an actor/director and club member – a doer, rather than a watcher. While with the British Forces overseas, he was responsible for promoting theatre on several army bases outside of England. He organized workshops and fostered participation in festivals.

Ken encouraged local community theatre groups to get involved with what is now Theatre BC. His participation in theatre is almost legend; he taught in addition to his many other roles. He became very active with White Rock Players after he retired, and was president of the club during the difficult time when its playhouse was closed by the city, as it did not meet code.

He worked hard for the theatre to raise money needed to do necessary renovations to the theatre.

At that time, the Vancouver zone was not very active and needed a shot in the arm.

Ken again became zone chair and helped to further its fortunes. He was appointed by Jim Warner, then-president of Theatre BC, as a member of the board with a special responsibility for the Vancouver zone. He was given recognition awards for his work in the Skeena zone and, later, in Vancouver. He remained a dedicated believer in strong and active community theatre, as was shown by his keen interest in Theatre BC. Well done, Ken. I hope you can hear us giving you your last round of applause.

We may be small, but we play big: Terrace Little Theatre tackles “Crimes of the Heart”.

In order to give their beloved McColl Playhouse some much needed renovations, Terrace Little Theatre has decided to downsize play production for 2011-2012.

The playhouse recently got a facelift with new exterior siding along with a spanking-new on site warehouse. Now it’s time to repair the crumbling seating, install a functional head-set system, renovate the bar area and paint the Green Room and washrooms. Not to speak of a massive clean-out to reduce clutter. Thespians easily become hoarders!

To free up time for this work the usual fall production was rescheduled to January, and dinner theatre and the spring show cancelled to allow time for the work and be ready for the always popular sold-out children’s program, Summer Drama Days. The lack of a Skeena Zone Festival also played into the decision.

In the meantime there will be play readings on a regular basis.

To receive notices of readings and other TLT events and member meetings, folks can take out a $5 membership at Uniglobe Courtesy Travel (or flag down a member of our Executive on the street). Membership also allows you to audition for plays and work backstage.

TLT is now preparing to tackle another hit as the season opener and only show.

Following hot on the success of “Steel Magnolias” last year director Marianne Brorup Weston picked “Crimes of the Heart”. She is quite clear she made numerous promises over the years to never direct a chick flick, and happily eats her words. “Things change. I’ve changed. And I do recall seeing both Steel Magnolias and Crimes on stage many years back and thinking, hey maybe I can improve on what I see.

So here we are. Wish me luck!”

Many will remember the 1986 hit movie of “Crimes of the Heart” starring Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek. Brorup Weston says she is not recreating the movie on stage. “This is a beautifully crafted play. The writing is fine. I want to honour the playwright’s words.”

She is over the moon with her cast. Veteran actor Nancy Stone-Archer (“The Watering Place”, “Desdemona, a play about a handkerchief”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “The Odd Couple Female Version”) is Lenny, the eldest Magrath sister whose life teeters on the verge of spinsterhood. Robin Hollett (“Hey, Naked Lady, “Nunsense I & II”, “The Secret Garden”) plays Chick, the social climbing, interfering first cousin, and award-winning actress Janine Hamming (“Mary’s Wedding”, “The Attic, the Pearls and Three Fine Girls”, “The Odd Couple Female Version”, “A Lie of the Mind“) brings to life Meg, a failed singer returning home to assist with the latest family drama. They are joined by Bayani Generoso as young upstart lawyer Barnette Lloyd (Bay debuted in last season’s “Bella Donna“).

New to the stage are Erica Wilson and Jonathan Stone respectively take on the roles of Babe Botrelle, the little sister of the Magraths who just got out of jail and Doc Porter, former boyfriend of Meg.

The production opens January 19th and runs through to February 4th 2012 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets are available at Uniglobe Courtesy Travel. Folks are advised to get their tickets early. Theatre tickets make great stocking stuffers!

The Club held its AGM in June and changed its fiscal year end to be in line with its season. Much to her astonishment, Marianne Brorup Weston was awarded a Honourary Life Time Membership at the meeting. It hosted the annual TLT Golf Scramble on a cold & rainy day in July.

On another note, TLT is sad to see long-time members Diana Braathen and Patrick McIntyre leave the northwest for Vancouver.

The couple (who fell in love during “Escape from Happiness” in 1995) has been part of the back bone of the Club, directing and acting numerous hit shows. Patrick also served as TLT President. They were recently honoured as “Unsung Heroes” at the annual TLT Members Appreciation Night featuring Copper Mountain String Band.

Di and Patman – you will be sorely missed!

The Pacific Mist Chorus (Sweet Adelines) are coming up to their Christmas Show and are looking for an actor willing to perform at our show. The chorus always ties their songs together with a script and this year we are using the device of having an audition. We need a male actor .30+ to lead the script. No memorization required, as you’ll have a clipboard, with the script on it.

The actor would also be asked to MC the second half (i.e. introduce the Xmas songs.)

2 performances … Nov. 26 and Dec 4 (the second one in Rupert). We would be responsible for picking you up and driving you to Rupert and getting you home.

There is also a tech rehearsal for Nov 24 and I would ask if you were able to come to one or two evening rehearsals - Thursday nights for about an hour each of 2 or 3 nights.

please call me at 635-5463 if you are interested and I’ll let you see the script.

Many thanks

Karla Hennig
