Joan MacLean is an actor, musician, director and teacher living in Burnaby. She appeared on stage all over North America for several years with Jim Leard’s Story Theatre Company out of Victoria. She first moved to Vancouver in order to build and run a theatre training program for ‘at risk’ youth in the Downtown Eastside at Station Street Arts Centre. She also acted for a couple of decades in Vancouver with favourite memories including 39 and Ticking (a clown musical), Mom’s The Word (playing 3 different roles over seven years), One Morning I realized I was Licking the Kitchen Floor (a comedy about depression) Brilliant Traces, and Homework & Curtains. (John Lazarus) After a type of epiphany on her 50th birthday, Joan returned to University to fulfill a lifelong dream of being a school teacher! She is the very happy and sometimes overwhelmed Drama teacher at Moscrop Secondary in Burnaby. She produces and directs two shows a year with her dedicated students. This year, she is producing a version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula by Laramie Dean. In the past, Joan has been lucky enough to adjudicate some zone festivals for Theatre BC (North Shore, Skeena and Central Interior) and most recently served as the Adjudicator for Mainstage 2024 in Chilliwack. She loves being part of the creativity, connection and
collaboration that can often be found with Community Theatre.
